John Lautner’s Polin House at 3542 Multiview Dr in Hollywood Hills

Yesterday was a good one for open houses. New on the market is John Lautner’s Polin House currently owned by Brent Bolthouse. John Lautner is one the 20th century’s important contemporary American architects who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright. His work was concerned with the relationship of the human being to space and of space to nature. “Shelter,” he said, “is the most basic human need.”

The Polin House is situated across and shares a private driveway with the Jacobsen residence, another one of Lautner’s creations. Structurally the house is similar to the Jacobson residence and the Carling House with the horizontal hexagonal steel frame supported on three tapered steel trusses. Since the walls are not load bearing it provides for a flexible interior space.

The house last exchanged hands in 2004 at which point it was sold in near original condition. Since then significant updates have been done to the home, while maintaining the integrity of Lautner’s work. The Polin House is modest in size at 1342 square feet and comprises of 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. At the entry level is a guest suite with a bathroom and laundry.
