This is one of the better examples of flips we’ve seen in recent times. Located on a cul-de-sac in the desirable Ivanhoe School District, this home was last sold in July of this year for $873,000. We’ve put some ‘before’ below for comparison.
Originally built in 1981, the house features 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths and sits on a 8,040 square foot lot. The older siding was stripped of the facade and replaced with Redwood siding and smooth stucco giving it a contemporary, clean vibe.
The lower level houses the living room, dining, kitchen and an office space. The house has an open flow and abundant light with 17′ high ceilings in the living room, opening onto a large spacious patio. (more…)

New on the market and sitting above the Silverlake Reservoir, is the Jenkyns House with walls of glass designed by Josef Van Der Kar (AIA) in 1960. The latest issue of Modernism magazine features a fascinating piece on this Van Der Kar, including the fact that he was as well-known for his political activism as his architecture. Van Der Kar was known for building homes for the ‘common man’ and worked with some notable architectural revolutionaries like Rudolph Schindler, Richard Neutra and ‘close friend and fellow leftist’ Gregory Ain on the controversial post war housing ‘Community Homes’ project, where he refused to comply with the FHA’s requirement to impose restrictions to ban sales to minority groups. As a result, the project never saw fruition.
Taking inspiration from Wohlstetter house in Laurel Canyon (built for Albert and Roberta Wohlstetter, a husband wife team of nuclear strategists and foreign policy advisors to the white house) the house is set above the street with a soaring roofline. Van Der Kar’s distinctive style can be observed in the flat-roofed, post and beam structure with walls of glass offering great views of the reservoir. (more…)
