So we’re really digging this Mid-Century that came on the market in Laurel Canyon the last couple of days. 3. Santa Monica Kite Festival
When we were kids, we loved to fly kites (secretly, we still do!). So this weekend, bring the family to Santa Monica for the first Annual Kite Festival.

Otis, the oldest private art institution in Los Angeles, created the event as a celebration for communities throughout Los Angeles. Tom Van Sant (MFA, 1957), world-renowned artist and co-creator of this event, will fly many of his famous kites.

We keep reading about a new pub opening in Hollywood. Now we just have to check it out to see what all the fuss is about.

New to the market is this 1927 Spanish Colonial Revival once attributed to architect Wallace Neff. Based in Southern California, Wallace Neff drew his inspiration both from Spain and the Mediterranean region as a whole, and is known for his contributions to the development of the architectural style referred to the the ‘California’ style. He is best known for Pickfair, a 56 acre estate in the city of Beverly Hills designed for silent film actors Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford.

4. The Hunger Games
“The Hunger Games” is hitting movie theaters this week and I, like many other adolescents and adults who have fallen in love with Suzanne Collins’ book, will be flocking to see it. Will Jennifer Lawrence live up to the Katniss Everdeen I’ve envisioned while reading the book? I can’t wait to find out.

The Millard House aka ‘La Miniatura’ in Pasadena is once again available for sale and can be yours for $4.495M. Situated on a roughly one acre lot, the house is nestled amongst trees and constructed using decorative stacked concrete blocks made of sand, gravel and minerals from the land it sits on, consistent with Frank Lloyd Wright’s love and use of natural materials.

The Millard House was the first of Frank Lloyd Wright’s four “textile block” houses (others being Storer, Freeman and Ennis) all built in Los Angeles County between 1923-1924. Wright was commissioned to build Millard House by Alice Millard, a rare-book dealer for whom Wright had built a home in Illinois back in 1906. Wright took on the Millard House following his completion of the Hollyhock House in Hollywood and the Imperial Hotel in Japan. A separate studio was added in 1926, designed by Wright’s son, Lloyd Wright.

The house was an experiment in modular housing as Frank Lloyd Wright aimed to develop an expensive and simple method of construction. Since it was the first of the four textile block homes, the blocks in the Millard House lacked rebar found in the latter three (a later addition to strengthen) and fared better than the rest since the inserted rebar rusted and damaged the concrete blocks.

The initial response to Millard House and its textile block structure was not positive. However, over the years, those views changed dramatically. The house is now considered one of Wright’s finest works. In 1976 the Millard house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In the architect’s own words: “What about the concrete block? It was the cheapest (and ugliest) thing in the building world. It lived mostly in the architectural gutter as an imitation of rock-faced stone. Why not see what could be done with that gutter rat?”

I pass by this house often on our daily walk with the twins and have always wondered what it must be like on the inside. Well, last week I got a chance to check it out. ‘The Fortress’ aka “King of the Hill’ is back on the market. Truly a one of a kind architectural designed by award winning architect David Lawrence Gray, AIA, the home has generated its fair share of controversy over the years. DataQuick: New HARP 2.0 could help 6.7 million more borrowers
Changes made to the Home Affordable Refinance Program could open the platform up to nearly double the number of homeowners eligible per previous requirements.

A study from San Diego-based DataQuick found an additional 6.7 million households may qualify under HARP 2.0, according to new loan-to-value ratio requirements. Those changes remove a 125% LTV upper limit, altering it to include borrowers with 80% or more LTV on their homes [ more... ]
